CU1 Expands to Three New Alaska Communities

In a bold demonstration of its mission to empower Alaskans and expand access to financial services statewide, Credit Union 1 has opened three new branches in 2025.
These three branches - located in Kotzebue, Wasilla and Skagway - were each chosen in response to direct calls from the communities themselves.
CU1’s expansion marks more than geographic growth; it is a reaffirmation of the credit union’s commitment to listening, responding and investing in places long underserved by traditional financial institutions.
“Our work has always been about answering the needs of Alaskans,” said CU1 President and CEO Mark Burgess. “Each of these branches represents a moment where we heard a community’s call, and we answered it with action.”
In Kotzebue, CU1 made history by opening the only credit union branch north of the Arctic Circle. Unveiled on February 14, the Kotzebue Branch—located inside the new Alaska Commercial Co. store—provides critical access to affordable banking in a region previously limited to one financial institution. The grand opening celebration included a ribbon cutting and community donation to the local Boys and Girls Club, reinforcing CU1’s long-term commitment to the region.
The Wasilla Branch, CU1’s 14th statewide, opened on April 4 in the heart of the Mat-Su Borough. This location strengthens CU1’s presence in one of Alaska’s fastest-growing communities, offering modern financial tools and personal service tailored to the needs of local families and small businesses. The opening was marked by a highly attended public celebration and VIP welcome for community leaders and stakeholders.
Most recently, CU1 opened its newest location in Skagway on April 25, following a formal request from the Skagway Borough Assembly. With limited options for local banking and a deeply rooted sense of community, Skagway called for a financial partner that understands life in rural Alaska. CU1 stepped forward—bringing with it a legacy of member-owned, Alaska-focused service.
“Credit Union 1 is built for moments like this,” Burgess added. “Where others see logistical challenges, we see opportunity. Where others pull back, we lean in.”
Together, these new branches embody CU1’s purpose: to strengthen communities through access, education and economic opportunity. With innovative tools like Interactive Teller Machines (ITMs), a small-dollar Quick Loan program, and free access to Greenlight debit cards for kids and teens, CU1 is not only meeting members where they are but preparing them for where they want to go.
