Taking on Tok and Reaching the Top of the World

We stopped in Tok the first night where we had a great spot in the woods. The campground made fresh sourdough pancakes daily - which made the mosquitoes worth it. Along the way, we stopped to ogle at the Matanuska Glacier and, as usual, encountered freshly fixed Alaskan roads. (We know the drill – winter then construction season, right?)

After leaving Tok, we headed for the Top of the World Highway, a.k.a. Taylor Highway. The sights were incredible, although hindered by fires burning in the area. Plenty of vastness and fireweed was had. Along the way, we stopped at Chicken – home of Chickenfest! It’s cute, it’s quaint, it’s Alaskan and they love chickens.

Finding the Border and Dawson City Gold

While a relatively short distance, it’s an all-day trip as weather and road conditions varies. It has steep drop-offs that could give you pause. We found the border and were treated to more rolling hills. Don’t let the picture fool you – the high point is 4500ft and no guard rails.

Once across the Yukon - by ferry off a sand beach to a barge that takes you across the river - you come to Dawson City. Fun Fact: this “drive” is also done by hearty snowmachiners in the dead of winter for a fun-packed weekend. After a fun night having dinner at Diamond Gerties (a not so reputable establishment back in the day) we headed down the Klondike, following the Yukon most of the way to Whitehorse. 

From Whitehorse to Skagway

Whitehorse was a lovely city, though we opted to head south on the Klondike trail by rail to hit up the town of Skagway. The ride down through White Pass was full of amazing views from glacial lakes up top, back through the border, the old bridge on the trail and when the clouds parted? Lush greenery and steep trails as the tour guide recanted the stories of folks from a century ago and their quest for riches!

Skagway was beautiful with multicolored buildings, many formally brothels and other salacious businesses in the beginning which made for a fun flair that only Skagway can offer. Our lunch of fresh fish and chips was so delicious. I’m a sucker for fresh snapper or rock fish.

Destruction Bay Then Homeward Bound

After leaving our day in Skagway, we toddled off to Destruction Bay for a breathtaking spot by the water. As our trip was getting closer to end, we had to determine who was the master Domino player! (Clue: it wasn’t me.) A final stop through Tok with our trusty Milepost in hand, we bid adieu to the north and headed home. We were treated to a spectacular view of Mt. Drum on the way south and then decided to grab a little lunch with a view overlooking the mighty Matanuska River.

If you’ve ever thought of making the loop, well, we highly recommend it. The views, the people, the wildlife, the culture and the stories you hear along the way, make it so worth it.
